President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico until both countries take steps to curb drug trafficking and illegal immigration into the United States.

Mexico is the world’s seventh-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, and 76% of its exports go to the United States.

The U.S. imports fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, berries, and avocados, from Mexico. Mexico is the second-largest supplier of agricultural products to America.

Canada’s top export product to the U.S. is crude petroleum and gas, but the country also has an important share of other products like vehicles, machinery, and electronics.

Drugs and Migrants Into the U.S.

U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, in contrast to 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border, as reported by The Logic.

Regarding immigration, U.S. Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border in October alone, compared to 23,721 arrests at the Canadian border between October 2023 and September 2024.

The tensions between the three countries come just over a year before the review of the free trade agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada, the T-MEC, which must be re-evaluated in 2026.
