As of Dec. 30, 2024, American firms account for 71.5% of the industry’s global market cap, even though most advanced chips are not actually produced in the United States.
Instead, America’s leadership stems from its expertise in chip design, intellectual property (IP), and software tools. These areas account for much of the value chain’s profitability.
After the U.S., Taiwan holds the second largest share of market value, largely thanks to TSMC.
TSMC is the world’s leading semiconductor contract manufacturer, meaning it produces chips that have been designed by other companies (like Apple).
TSMC became a trillion-dollar company in late 2024 due to its dominance in manufacturing cutting-edge chips for AI, 5G, and EVs.
Semiconductors Gain Another Trillion-Dollar Company
Broadcom (Ticker: AVGO) ended 2024 with a bang after releasing a stellar earnings report in December, as well as announcing its latest partnership with Apple to produce an AI chip.
The company is working with other tech giants to design custom AI infrastructure, which could push its AI-related revenues to up to $90 billion a year by 2027 (up from $12 billion currently).
