Visualized: Nuclear Energy Generation by Region
Global Nuclear Energy Generation by Region in 2023
In 2023, global energy consumption reached 17,200 TWh. This incredible demand underlines the importance of exploring clean and sustainable energy solutions, like nuclear energy, particularly for developed economies.
For this graphic, the first in the three-part Fueling the Future series, Visual Capitalist partnered with Global X ETFs to explore nuclear energy generation further, determine which regions generated the most nuclear energy in 2023, and investigate why nuclear is critical to the clean energy transition.
The Place of Nuclear in the Energy Mix
While nuclear energy makes up around 15% of the global energy mix, it has a much larger share in developed economies like those in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. In fact, the U.S. generates nearly 30% of the world’s nuclear power.
Here is how much nuclear energy was generated by each region in 2023:
Region | Nuclear Energy Generation |
---|---|
North America | 917.6 TWh |
Asia Pacific | 781.1 TWh |
Europe | 735.9 TWh |
Commonwealth of Independent States | 231.8 TWh |
Middle East | 38.9 TWh |
South & Central America | 23.5 TWh |
Africa | 8.9 TWh |
Why is Nuclear Energy Important?
Producing clean energy responsibly and consistently is crucial for many developed economies, like the U.S., where harmful fossil fuels currently dominate energy generation. Consequently, many developed nations are exploring the possibilities of energy-dense nuclear power sources.
Historically, nuclear reactions have been a reliable, safe source of energy. Compared to other energy sources, functioning nuclear reactors produce the fewest emissions per gigawatt hour of any fuel type–less than 1% of emissions from coal.
Energy Source | Average GHG Emissions (metric tons per GWh) |
---|---|
Coal | 970 |
Oil | 720 |
Natural Gas | 440 |
Solar | 53 |
Hydro | 24 |
Wind | 11 |
Nuclear | 6 |
The Emerging Energy Opportunity
Global energy demands are increasing, and so is the need for clean and reliable energy. Nuclear energy fulfills that criteria by consistently producing incredible amounts of power with few emissions compared to other energy sources.
In part two of the Fueling the Future Series, we explore how the world has embraced nuclear power and is investing heavily in its use.
