It made history as the first and so far only animated film to surpass $1 billion in international sales.

Established IP was the cornerstone of 2024’s box office success, with nearly all top-performing films being sequels, spin-offs, or franchise continuations. Major hits like Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked attracted large global audiences by drawing from well-known franchises and established stories.

Legacy sequels like Gladiator II and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice tapped into nostalgia, further highlighting the dominance of familiar brands. This trend reflects the industry’s reliance on pre-existing fan bases to mitigate risks and drive consistent revenue in a recovering market.

The only original, non-sequel films in 2024’s top 20 global box office list were DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot and It Ends with Us, with the latter being an adaption of a best-selling romance novel.
