Data centers are often considered as the backbone of the digital world, powering everything from social media to cloud computing.

In this graphic we visualize how many each country has, as of March 2024, using data from Cloudscene (accessed via Statista).

Data and Key Takeaways

The numbers we used to create this graphic are included in the table below. The global total is 11,800.

Countries with the most data centers include the U.S. (45.6% share of total), Germany (4.4%), and the UK (4.4%).

America’s Data Center Boom

With nearly half of the global total, the U.S. is the clear leader when it comes to computing.

In recent years, the country’s massive tech conglomerates (e.g. Microsoft, Amazon) have invested billions in digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence.

The cost of all this computing power is rising energy consumption. For context, the average ChatGPT query requires 10 times more electricity to process than a traditional Google search.

According to Goldman Sachs Research, data centers will be the largest driver of future U.S. electricity demand. By 2030, data centers will account for 8% of total demand, up from 3% in 2022.

China Has to Do it Alone

Due to its ongoing trade war with the U.S., which has banned the export of advanced chips like Nvidia GPUs, China must now design and build its own chips.

According to CNBC, manufacturing chips is a greater challenge than designing them.

This is because China has no domestic company capable of manufacturing leading edge semiconductors. This type of expertise can take many years to develop.

Furthermore, the equipment needed to make these chips comes exclusively from the Netherlands’ ASML, which has also been banned from exporting to China.
