As of January 2025, several Asian countries including Taiwan, China, and South Korea are key players in the semiconductor foundry market.
Taiwan specifically dominates, with TSMC alone commanding a staggering 62% share of total foundry revenue.
Including contributions from other Taiwan-based companies like UMC, VIS, and PSMC, the country’s combined share exceeds 70%.
South Korea follows, with Samsung accounting for 10% of the market. Meanwhile, the United States and China each make notable contributions, led by GlobalFoundries (6%) and SMIC (5%), respectively.
Can Other Players Challenge Taiwan?
China, the United States, and South Korea are ramping up efforts to expand their semiconductor industries through increased investments and government support to reduce reliance on Taiwan.
While American firms are the global leaders in the overall semiconductor industry accounting for 71.5% of global market cap, this dominance is primarily driven by their strengths in chip design, intellectual property (IP), and software tools.
The manufacturing side of most advanced chips occurs overseas in foundries like TSMC. These factories use highly specialized, cutting-edge equipment, such as extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, to fabricate advanced chips with nanometer-scale precision, making them uniquely capable of producing the most complex and powerful semiconductors.
