In 2023, the U.S. beer industry shipped the equivalent of 2.6 billion 24-packs, driving over $135 billion in retail sales.

Overall, domestic producers accounted for 79% of the market, with legacy American brands leading in popularity in most states according to search data. However, some outliers showed a strong preference for distinctive brands like Blue Moon and Guinness.

Miller Ranks as Most Popular Beer in 30 States

Below, we show the beer brands with the highest search interest by state according to Google Trends analysis:

Miller Brewing Company, founded in 1855 in Wisconsin, generated the highest search interest nationally by a wide margin, known for its MGD, Miller Lite, and Miller High Life brands.

Miller dominated in the West and Midwest, while Coors had the largest search interest in southwestern region of the country. Like Miller Brewing Company, Coors’ history traces back more than 150 years at the Golden Brewery in Colorado.

Meanwhile, Heineken was the most popular in Florida and New York. It also ranks as the top beer brand among millennials across the country.

Notably, Budweiser and Bud Light generated minimal search interest overall, standing as the top ranking beer in a combined four states. In 2023, Bud Light was dethroned by Modelo Especial as the top-selling beer in America by retail sales amid marketing controversy, after holding this title for many years.
