Every year, thousands of Americans decide to pack up their things and move to a another state, whether it’s to pursue new career opportunities, seek more pleasant climates, or downsize due to high cost of living.

This visualization shows the top five states that American residents moved to in 2023 and visualizes their migration inflows, with the top three states of origin for each destination labelled.

State-by-state migration flow data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau and is updated as of August 2024.

Only residents aged one year and older were included and the data includes Puerto Rico but does not include those moving from a foreign country or another U.S. island territory.

Which States Did Americans Move To In 2023?

Below, we show the top five states that Americans moved to in 2023, each states’ total number of new residents from other states, and the number of new residents from each states’ top three states of origin.

According to Steinway Moving and Storage, the average American moves about 11 times throughout their life.

U.S. Census Bureau data shows that 12% of Americans moved to a different residence within the U.S. in 2023.

Some stayed close to home and moved within their home state, while others embarked on cross-country relocations. Out of those who moved to different residence in 2023, 80% moved within their state and 20% moved to a different state, according to census data.

Four of the top five states attracting new residents—Florida, Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina—are located in the southern and southwestern Sun Belt region, known for its warmer climate and relatively affordable housing.

Florida saw the highest total number of new residents from other states at 649,467. Its warm climate, lack of state income tax, and lower cost of living make it particularly appealing to people moving from more expensive, colder states like New York, which accounted for 11% of Florida’s new residents.

California remains the only West Coast state in the top five, possibly due to its favorable climate, and ongoing appeal in industries like tech, despite high costs and out-migration.
