One key factor in Hawaii’s high gas prices is the war in Ukraine and subsequent Russian oil embargoes. Before the war, Russia supplied about 25-30% of Hawaii’s oil. Additionally, the state imposes some of the highest gas taxes in the nation.
California ranks second, also with high local taxes and a unique gasoline blend designed to reduce emissions, which drives up prices.
In contrast, states like Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama often have lower gas prices due to their proximity to refineries.
